Wheelock G. Veazey to Julia A. Veazey

I just rec’d yr letters with the dress patterns, very handsome both of them. Am
glad to hear you are well again. I am. Our court marshall is dissolved. Genl.
Braman is going to Florada. We went out on a foraging & scouting expedition
Tuesday & tried to provoke a fight but failed. I shall have to go on to
picquet duty again now. It is rather hard business in winter, have to be out all
night. I wish I could go home a few weeks. Give my regards to Mrs. Danforth. It
is very warm & pleasant. We ex- pect to move somewhere before a great while.
If we don’t I shall try for a leave of absence. I would have you come out here
if I were sure I could not come home. I see they are trying in congress to cut
down
our pay. They might as well for the nation is bankrupt. I fear
we shall have a disgraceful place ere 3 months. There is no sincerety among our
rulers. I should be glad to see one ray of hope - but I fear the history of our
downfall will soon be written The old democratic humbug of aggrandizement &
“manifest destiny” was a rock to large for us to sail around. Capt Atherton has
returned fat & healthy & glad enough to get back. He says his wife was
the only attraction for him Vt. Write me some good letters my darling. I should
be so glad to see you. Good night
