Wheelock G. Veazey to Julia A. Veazey

I rec’d two or three very short letters from you within a day or two. In the one
to night you ask if I am tired of your letters? Are’nt you ashamed? Is’nt the
reason you are so sick because you go out evenings to parties while sick &
eat late suppers – & set up late generally? I cant stand such things when
well. I have got quite smart again. Perhaps you were more sick because I was
sick. A college classmate, Barnard, called on me to day. I dont know what to
think about a leave of absence. The impression seems strong that we shall have
something to do soon. Something must be done or the Confederacy will be
recognized. And will deserve it. But I cant see what we can do. I should feel
rather ashamed to visit home until I had been in one good fight. But I do want
to see
you very much my love. If I could only get away about 30 days
I should feel thankful. Floyd has been very sick with a fever for a month, but
is better now. Lute is getting [ ] She will
stand as straight as her name sake. I have worked her much for a week or two.
Who is Lt. Rogers? Where is yr Lt. Weld? you have’nt mentioned him in two
letters. Reckon you need a little, well I dont know – yr letters are pretty
short, guess I shall have to come home. It rains to-night. I dined with Major
Proctor. Good night my sweet wife.
Your fond husbandWheelock –
