I have the honor to enclose to you your pay a/c's as Colonel 1st Vermont Volunteers made out to the 15th August 1861 on which day the regiment was mustered out.
You are entitled to your pay as Colonel up to that time though you are not debarred from drawing additional pay as Brigadier General from the date of your acceptance of that position
On enquiry at the office of the Adjutant General I find that you have not yet accepted your appointment of "Brigadier General" You are of course aware that you pay in that rank commences from the date of acceptance. If your acceptance is dated before the 15 of August 1861 you can draw the additional pay
I hold a reciept given by Lt Col Washburn for Five hundred
dollars ($500)
drawn by him on a/c of your pay. On the return to me of your pay a/c signed by you I
will mail you my check for the balance
I also send you two blank pay a/c's if the others are not filled up as you wish
