Roswell Farnham to Mary [Farnham]
Primary tabs
We arrived here safe and sound all of us except our fifer, whom we left sick of the measles at Bellows Falls. We have just been to supper and are now quartered with the Northfield Company in the Town Hall.
We are all in good spirits and "they say" we have as good a company as there is on the ground.
We were heartily greeted the whole of the way. At Bellows Falls we were met by the citizens, the Band and the Fire Company, and after being escorted through the streets, were very unexpectedly invited into a hall, tastely trimmed, to partake of refreshments prepared by the ladies of the town. I saw Mrs. Miller and Frances Taylor who used to go to school to us. Mrs. Miller will send you a paper and Laura containing a notice of our reception there.
Joe Bliss had made every provision for us
here, and we are as comfortably
situated as could be expected. He is going home in the morning and will take this
along to you. We shall probably stay here till Monday.
I will write you often and you must do the same. I forgot my bed tick and shall get one here. Be of good cheer and keep up good courage.
Love to Laura - Say a word for me to Jane, I saw her crying as hard as she could cry at the Depot.
Mr. Stebbins and Mr. Benton came over with us and are here. You can see him (Mr. S.) when he gets home and he will tell you all he can.
Don't have any anxiety about me. The State means to take the best care of us.
With much loveYour affectionate husbandRos.
