I wrote you yesterday that I thought I would be in Vt soon on recruiting servise
but these hopes were blasted last evening with the death of Maj Jarvis He went
out Yesterday morning with a cavalry escort beyond our lines to get information
if possible with regard to some Horses that were stolen from us. While at a Mr.
Denises near White Oak Rive he heard of some (3) Rebel soldiers who had passed
there a short time before. He (Maj) had 6 or 8 men with him and thought he would
go on and capture them He overtook them near Cedar Pt. about 15 miles from here
and in the attempt to capture them was mortally wounded in the Abdomen and died
at a house about 3 or 4 miles this side he was shot He lived from abt
(when shot) 3 P.M. till 10 1/2 P.M. and was brought in His loss will be much
felt in the Regt for the was a Father to every one and
one of the most strictly honest man and conciencious Christians I
ever saw The one who shot him was captured but the other two got away, one of
which was wounded. His remains will be sent to Vt this P.M. by His death
I am left alone to comd the Regt and Col R- says I cant be spared
possibly. You will have to give up seeing me for a while yet but I hope to get a
chance to get home yet. Since writing the above I have recd & read two good
letters from you on the 28 & 25- also one from Carrie & I will answer
her & Freds also- in a few days. My time now is needed else where so I will
have to close
Yours Affly V.G. Barney
