Dear Mr Marsh.

I write you from our new residence, 1445, Mass. Avenue. We have been in it only a few days & are just beginning to be settled. One great inducement in coming to this neighborhood was its proximity to the Edmunds. We are in the same Square, about a hundred yards distant. The house is very comfortable & convenient, & we hope to have a very good time in it. We begin rather unfortunately, as Mary is quite sick in bed, the result of the excitement of moving combined with a very severe cold.

Thanks for sending the Archaeological Bulletin. Lucy will be very glad to have it. If you will send the mineralogical work to which you refer I will see that it is properly noticed. In sending please renew the memorandum to that effect. With much love to Mrs Marsh from all of us, believe me,

Sincerely Yours,S F Baird.

Hon. George P. Marsh.
U.S. Minister,
Rome,
Italy.

The international exhibition to celebrate the centennial of American independence was held in Philadelphia. Many items displayed in the exhibits were brought back to Washington, significantly increasing Smithsonian holdings.

George Franklin Edmunds (1828-1919) began his career practicing law in Burlington. He served in the Vermont State House of Representatives and in the State Senate. In 1866 he was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican to fill the vacancy caused by Solomon Foot's death and served for four terms. He resigned in 1891. Edmunds was married to Susan Edmunds, the daughter of Marsh's sister and Wyllys Lyman, his Burlington friend.
