Dear Baird
My secretary at Rome has forwarded me a notice from Hoepli of Milan, that he has sent me a package of books from the Smithsonian (which I suppose to be Pub. Doc. forwarded through to S.) and saying that he shall soon dispatch a case, to the Smiths. & will put in anything I may want to send to learned Societies c. free of charges.
I do not know how far he is authorized to make this offer, nor whether packages to
the S. go free of duty, , or , addressed to [...]
institutions. I can't find anything in the Laws giving any such privileges to the S.
Please let me know what can be done in this matter.
I have a N of
the Bol. Arche. for Lucy, & a 4to to Rep. on
other excavations, with too many plates to be safe in the mail. Can such things be
sent through Hoepli?
I am printing a [...] here & shall leave in a day or two. I do not go back to Rome till about Aug. 5.
If you can do anything to help about giving Torlonia's Report about Lake Fucino a fair chance, please lend a hand He sends 70 copies addressed to State Dept
We all salute youYours trulyG P Marsh
Prof S F Baird
