Letter from GEORGE PERKINS MARSH to SPENCER FULLERTON BAIRD, dated May 28, 1860.

Dear Baird
The books arrived much sooner than I expected, and I am infinitely obliged to you for
the trouble you have had with them They came uninjured, except one box, several vols
of which were much injured by wet. The forwarding people here think they must have
been wet before they were shipped, as they were much moulded, and the paper in some
of them quite rotten. I think they were exposed to hot escape steam, or stowed in a
hot place on board they might have been as much injured in a week. The question is
not worth troubling you with, but if you think they were dry when shipped, I shall
of course not pay freight. I am ashamed to mention this after all the plague you
have had, but I
am going to give you a little more.
II. Of the books left
at the S.I, the following are missing.

missing --------
I suppose most of these have been , & are gone without the
reach of process, but there is no blame on your part ( that is on the part of any
Smithsonian) So, unless they happen to have accidentally got among the general
library, don't try to search for them elsewhere---
III. Per contra, you have
sent me of what is not mine.
, Dict. pour l'intelligence des
auteurs classiques vols I to XXXV. I believe, coming down from A to This
I never owned, but it has not your mark. I suppose it ought to have it --
[?] . Encyc. of Antiq., Vol. III. This was mine, but I sold it
to Smith. Inst. with the other vols --
IV. I sold G. C. Warmholtz, Bibliotheca
Historica Sueo. Goth. in XVI or XVII vols. You have now another copy, and I believe
a better
as being large paper. Will you sell the worst one & for how
much? I don't know what it cost?--
V. I don't propose to back
Sabathier & [Fasbrooke?]. I doubt whether Sabathier is worth
, & freight for the whole would be too much to pay on
[Fasbrooke?]. Shall I send them by the freight line?
Yours trulyGeo P Marsh
Prof. Baird
