United States Senate Chamber,
Washington, July 211876
Prst. M. H. Buckham,
Burlington, Vt
My dear Sir: Senator Randolph, a
visitor with
you at West Point, has twice spoken
to me in such
complimentary terms about
you and your services at
West Point that it
gratified me much, so much that
I am
unwilling to wholly conceal the matter, and,
as I cannot, I am sorry to say, claim Mrs
Buckham as one of my correspondents, may
I beg that you will tell her Senator Randolph
says you were the soul of the
examining board,
working them
all very hard, extorting from
the officers there the praise of doing the
best work done there for twenty years, and
winding up with the statement that he
(Randolph) was charmed with husband,
Pray add and say to Mrs B. that I
do not tender this information because
she ought to feel any solicitude about
your proper deportment when you are
away from home.
Very truly yours
Justin S. Morrill
