Prst. Buckham,
Burlington, Vt.
My dear Sir: Your favor of the
3 inst.
was duly received and I thank
you for your
explanations as I was una-
ware of the "flop" of
Harry who has
long claimed to be one of the
staunch,
early and late, friends of the College.
Truth, of course, is always best and
no doubt your statement will be sat-
isfactory to our people in Vermont. I
wish the farmers here would do
as
well as in some other states, but cer-
tainly you are doing very well this
year at Burlington.
And now Senator Boutwell has
given
the cold shoulder to what he
calls Ag. Colleges.
Boutwell has
ambition. He has been next door
to the White House. It is but a step.
Just now he is in the circle of
[Profes-]
[sions] -- "the Hub" -- and
there they do
not want built up any rivals by
Govt. aid. But I only intended to
thank you for your letter - and
am
Very truly
yours
Justin S. Morrill
