Dear sir:
Your favor of the 4th instant
was duly received, and I very much
regret that you are following the lead
of Brother Messer from Vermont in
relation to agricultural and in-
dustrial education. It is of course
particularly aimed at the institution
in Vermont, which I perhaps know
as much about as Brother Messer.
They are doing most excellent work
there, both in relation to agriculture

and the mechanic arts; and the
Experiment station, if it should be
changed to a school or a new insti-
tution, could not comply with the
provisions of the original act of 1862,
which was never intended to exclude
the classics but was for the purpose
of making agriculture and the mechanic
arts more prominent than they were
in the existing Colleges. This has
been done, and I think our people
are entirely satisfied with the present
conditions and prosperity of the insti-
tution at Burlington, Vt. I have no
idea that we could do anything
like as well by a new institution.

We have the benefit of all the
capital,
professors and
buildings,
as well as
donations
that are annually made to the
present institution. I regret
that the National Grange of the Patrons
of Husbandry should attempt to
secure so radical a change as they
propose, which would render it merely
an institution for instruction in
agriculture and the mechanic arts
and nothing more, and the cost of
competent professors is now so large
that it would be impossible in a
separate institution to secure com-
petent professors for a state
with
so
small an original fund
