Committee of Finance, U. S. Senate,
Washington, Jany. 21st, 1879.
My dear Sir:
Your favor, with the letter of Judge Ben-
nett, was duly received. I suppose you will
have to wait and let the institution grow, and
yet I thought it possible, through the laudable
ambition of Vermont men learned in the Law,
to organize a law department, without a special
fund, and supported only by charges for tuition.
It is a pity that we could not have Judge
Peck's large store of legal lore packed in
a few years of lectures where it would not
be lost.
I am glad if you are getting along
harmoniously, but I hear Mr. Douglas is

still unhappy and firing away at you
in the papers.
Of course I am very glad to hear
that James gives evidence of good [work]
as I would prefer to have him take his
place with his class again next year if
possible. Otherwise he will have to finish his
education under a private teacher.
I return Judge Bennett's letter.
Very truly yours
Justin S. Morrill
