Brattleboro Vt. July 23d 1863 Dear Sister,

Page 1

The boys are all going home to day to stay until a week from this time. The officers cannot leave until accounts are settled, so I cannot get home for a few days. If possible I shall come home before the boys get back as I shall have to stay there until we are mustered out. There will be no use in any ones coming down to see the soldiers for there will be no soldiers here to see; all their arms & equipments are to be turned over this morning.

If my pants are ready please send them the first oppotunity, some one will be coming down prehaps, if not before send by some of the boys that come back. You may also put in two or three b[o]iled shirts.

I shall come home saturday if possible, if you do not have a chance to send these things by some one that is coming & can bring them as well as not keep them until I come home.

Your Aff Brother Joseph Spafford
