My dear Sir:
Upon returning home today I find
your favor of Aug. 29th, and I am glad that Mr.
Marsh has concluded to let you have his Library for
$10,000. I hope, however, that his reservations will
not take out valuable nuggets. The parties who
gave me encouragement last year, I shall not
see until December. I think the Trustees should
assume the responsibility of the purchase and
then each one of us should be a beggar
until the full sum, with the cost
of transportation and insurance[,] has been
obtained. As for me I will try to do my
share of the work.
Yes, I wd get back the father if it can
be done without any loss of honor.

Our "friend" I did think a little gushing
upon the mention of my name as one
of the Committee to look after the invest-
ment of the $50,000. And this reminds
me that at least I should inquire what
has been done with it. Please inform me.
One of our townsmen, I hear, places his
money in a Bank at St. Albans at
5 p. ct. If the Bank is sound, this
sounds queer for an institution organized
to loan money. I do not pay so much
when I borrow. In Boston there is a
pinch just now and Banks, short, pay
as high as 7 p. ct. to be tided over.
I have not noticed how many
students entered this year. At Dartmouth
I hear they are a little short.
