My dear Sir: Your favor of the
18th inst. is at hand but the article you
mention from the Record was enclosed.
No matter. I saw Prof. Cressey and prom-
ised to speak to you about him but did
not as I expected find any opportunity
to do so. He is mistaken entirely as to
the extent of my encouragement for I
emphatically endorsed the Policy of
not running in debt, as I have always
done, but did tell him I had no doubt
the College would do something for him
and I hoped in a satisfactory way.
He spoke something about the order and
time of his lectures. It was that which

I supposed we might study to accommodate
him about. He must remember, as it
seems to me, that I could not
approve the policy of running in debt
under any circumstances. He also
spoke of a residence in Burlington
which I of course thought and
said would probably be a much
better location for him, as it was a
larger place than Amherst and
would be likely to offer him
much more business in his
profession.
I regret that Prof. Cressey
should have misunderstood
me in the slightest degree
for I think in his profession he
is a useful man, but I
suppose he is nervous and

and anxious about his future and
having talked with various parties
has got what I said a little
mixed with what may have
been said by others.
