3o — Our IN THE 'MOUNTAINS — SEPTEMBER 1999 TIIBI‘B'S N0 "308 lillfl HIIIIIB On the morning of Tuesday, August 3, a large group of Vermonters descended upon the lawn of the State House in Montpelier to tell a much smaller group from out of state that they were most assuredly not in Kansas anymore. Rarely does an occaission better lend itself to the Wizard of Oz theme. The presence of members of the Bread and Puppet troup served to preserve the calm and turn the moment into more of a celebration than an angry scene. The only scuffle was a result of another non-Vermonter’s attempt to take a sign from the hands of Fred Phelps, Jr. The police were literally on top of the situ- ation immediately -- as were members of the press.
