Faith Matters and Trail Matters continued from page seventeen The Holy One for help sooner rather than later. It also taught me to have faith in the help The Holy One sends, even if its guise seems odd or questionable. I am comforted to know that The Holy One, when asked, will help me find the trail that matters when I need it most. It is also comforting to know this, in turn, helps strengthen my faith in The Holy One in the ways that matter. Even though I learned these things the hard way, I am eternally grateful for the lessons. It was a powerful way to realize that none of us walks this earth alone or without support, except by choice. I did- n’t have any particular creden- tials for what was useful to the women's movement. I could milk a cow. What good was that? There was a lot of pressure to be identical and think identically, but I think the truth is we weren’t.” And of course those of us with children had to struggle to fit into this mobile gang of adventure-seekers. “I had no sense of community. I was a sin- gle mom. I was alone. I was iso- lated with my children.” Don’t get me wrong. The Burlington Women’s Community was a miracle for many women whose voices and spirits were sti- fled by the patriarchy for genera- tions. We were often extraordi- narily kind to each other. We were strong, gentle, brave, and encouraging. I doubt whether most of the group dynamics I’ve pointed out could have been avoided, given our stage of evolution 25 years ago. But, somehow, giving voice to our pain has been healing for me, personally. It’s the first step towards forgiveness, and it has helped me to put in perspective PRIMARY CARE IN FRANKLIN COUNTY Mara Vijups, M.D. Family Practice Specialist NMC Rural Health Services Caring for Adults & Children Enggsburg §wag;on East; Fgjrfiglg 933-583 1 868-2454 827-3032 behaviors I no longer value. Despite some considerable embarrassment tinged with shame (since I was one of those overbearing loudmouths, for sure), I wouldn’t have traded it for the world. Being an integral part of the Burlington Women’s Community was one of the most transfonnative experiences in my life, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
