that allowed the protest to continue at a slightly greater distance from the stand.
However, a representative of the Town of Greensboro, which owns the property
on which the vendors were set up, arrived to insist that the group cease its pro-
test altogether. I

"T his is not what Bread and Puppet is about,” the woman exclaimed to
incredulous onlookers. Stating that people should just go about their business
without causing any disturbance, she demanded that the protest break up. "If
you had a booth here, would you want them protesting you?” she asked of the
crowd. "We live with that every day,” was the response from a member of the

g pMany people expressed their appreciation at being educated about where
their money was going. Others simply pushed passed the throng, determined to
get coffee. The protestors were heartened by the significant number of straight
people who expressed support for the protest.

A “Tribe” member specifically questioned Penn's sexuality. ”Yes I am
straight. When I had a conversation with a fellow [from the Island Pond group]
he kept asking me ifl was gay. I wouldn't tell him. I could tell that he was look-
ing for a reason to label me demented and to dismiss my words.”

The hot sun proved to be more effective than the security officers in break-
ing up the protest. After about an hour and ahalf, the crowd dwindled to just
Penn and a few others who remained into the afternoon to spread the informa-
tion.

cacy and emergency financial assistance to more than 150 people living with
HIV / AIDS. The agency also provides HIV] AIDS Prevention Education across
the 10 counties it covers.

One of Vermont CARES’ clients said ”I am a woman who has lived with
HIV for over 16 years. One of the most difficult things for me has been trying to
balance new hope with reality. The journey is not over. I have been feeling healthy
for the last couple of years, and recently had a healthy baby boy. I did not do this
alone. The support of my friends, family and Vermont CARES have helped make
my dreams come true while I continue to battle HIV.”
