AM 044/5-11-98 Gender Studies House a reality at Middlebury? coiztinrred from flout page Studies students are delighted with the Community Council's decision, many fear that the house may never make it past the first year, given a history of skepticism on the part of many students, faculty and administrators. On May 3, President McCardell indicated on a student radio call—in show that he would be likely to support a Gender Studies House beyond the first year of existence only if an official Gender Studies program were created. The college currently has a Women's Studies program which offers minors and majors. Women's Studies faculty have in the past been hesitant to change the program into Gen- der Studies for fear of the erasure of women as the focus of the interdisciplinary held. The college offered its first Queer Studies class, ID 386 Articulation of the Queer Voice, in the spring of1996 and offered it again the following year. This year, no one registered for the class, prompting tenured professor Richard Cornwall to resign. A number of other homophobic actions on the part of administrators and students prompted many queer students to take action to demand more attention to diversity is- sues on campus. On February 20, the women's basketball team advertised a game with brightly colored posters bearing the words, ”Who are you calling a PANSY?” Students and faculty members who requested an apology were told that the team meant no harm. On April 1, The Campus, Middlebury College's student newspaper, ran an ad in their April Fools Day issue that featured three black men and the words ”Gang Members, Drug Users, Rapists, Arsonists”. In addition to the racist content, the ad urged readers, ”Teach your kids that you don't need to be a pansy,” In response, approximately 150 students, faculty and staff demonstrated in front of Old Chapel on Monday, April 13 to give voice to silenced students and to demand pro—active efforts from the administration to curb racism and homophobia on ‘campus. In a TV interview front his office, McCardell denied that Middlebury was a racist or homophobic campus. I-le’offered that the campus has ”issues of race and issues ofsexuality.” Many students called for the resignation of the author of the ad, Frank Pandolphe, and Editor—ln-Chief Lela Moore. Moore did issue a retraction in the April 3 issue, and Pandolphe authored an apology: On April 8, President McCardell resurrected the Human Relations Committee, which had dissolved itself in 1993, in an effort to address the prob- lems plaguing the campus. This action was heavily criticized by faculty and students alike as nothing more than a gesture. The Student Government Association voted in a special session on April 15 to allow Moore to retain her post. Town meetings were held with the Trustees on Friday, April 17, but no reforms resulted. On Sunday, April 19, the Rutland Herald ran a front page article on the plight of gay and lesbian students at the college. President McCardell was quoted as saying that he wouldn't "endorse or approve of” homosexuality at Middlebury and that he didn't be- lieve that ”matters which, for a great many people, still lie within the realm of personal privacy ought somehow to be a matter for institutional concern.” That same night, two male students were attacked in what many believe to be a homophobically motivated incident. A male assailant yelled, ”Queer!” as he hit one of the students on the head with a blunt object and then fled the scene with another man and woman in a vehicle with Rutland plates. To date, the administration will not admit the possibility of homophobic motivation and refuses to support its investigation as a hate crime. Several other attacks on students occurred that same week. On April 22, President John McCardell, Jr. accused the gay community of outing people against their will in an interview with The Campus. He also accused MOQA of subsuming the demonstration with ”issues of gender and sexuality”. He claimed that MOQA presented a ”systematic agenda", ”having much less to do with race than their own agenda”. Within days, MOQA issued posters reaffirming their ongoing commitment to member confidentiality. They denounced the practice of outing and denied outing any members of the college community. On April 29, many queer students joined the newly formed Students Concerned for Community in a protest on McCullough Green. Approximately 200 students demanded that President McCardell publicly admit racism and homophobia on the Middlebury cam- pus and that he establish a Diversity Affairs office to provide advocacy and support for underrepresented groups at Middlebury. The President did admit racism and homopho- bia on campus, but took no further action. At press time, President McCardell has not yet released his decision on the estab- lishment of a Gender Studies House. MOQA and house proposal authors Stephanie Hunt and Gwynn Guilford were told a decision would be reached on May 12. Many students foresee greater obstacles for queer empowerment at the college. Senior Sarah Centenni offered, ”The administration doesn't recognize that sexuality is an issue in the world. There is no curriculum that supports affirming your value in the world.” Activism remains a tough challenge for many Middlebury students. Middlebury is known for being one of the least politically active colleges in the nation. Many students who support change fear that the wave of activism will be difficult to sustain. ’’I think activism is difficult because the common line of thought is that it is a temporary mo- ment,” senior Lisa lanicki maintains. "The attitude that comes from the administration is, ‘Okay, you can have this day to be activist but then you can't do it anymore.’ A lot of us have in common the fact that we haven't done a lot of this and in order to cultivate it we need to do it all the time, not just one day. There's this attitude that once a dialogue starts, it's time to stop activism.” Many argue that activism is particularly tough for queer Middlebury students, sim- ply because they are so easily discredited. "It’s about hegemony. Period.” states senior David Grarnling. "Students are incapacitated by the need to rephrase and rephrase and rephrase the things they already know so well. We're forced to put our own community and our allies in a second class position just because the authorities at hand don't get it.” However, MOQA activists still express hope for the future. ”T he most powerful thing is that the queer community here is based on love and not competition,” asserts graduating senior Anne Moore. ”One of the positive ideas that I get out of the attempt at revolution is that the conversation happened around homophobia for the first time, and my friends and I did that. Now the discussion is about racism, sexism, and homophobia and that is amazing.” K . , Ra... . . ‘,4 .,..A._\ ..,....:L.;,, ~‘.‘«,~: at ,- ---, «;...... . 5, it.- ‘an 3;’; . -, I, ,4» .. ,—-I .-,a., ., 3., 5., ‘ as-.1:/I. .”- -‘~ =>' ' 1' ~ til“;-"V1"li|!'»r" --1 ‘.'K|« -)3 7, ii- 1 «er. . .
