Local DJ seduces Chilean diplomat’s daughter continued from page fourteen here. Working in radio has been a source of delight and struggle forthis smoky voiced DJ. A woman who loves “turning people on to good music” and describes herself as “not into ratings. l’m ambitious, but not competitive. I like people." she told me. And this is the crux of the problem in the DJ business. Always needing to pack up and move to where the big bucks are and the next most choice job is, can be tedious. This past year, as the station went through transition and rearranged itself in the interest of better ratings, they put Chris and Alexa together. It was a snap decision, based on a moment of great interplay between the two which was completely spontaneous. The fact was, to put them together simply because “Corm the Coach was gone and suddenly Vermont was lefi without a ‘morning show’ " turned out to be a disastrous move. Not only did Alexa and Chris mix like Gasoline and a struck match, as their show went spiraling into a fighting match over the next months, the station let the conversations go on over the air waves. Personalities clashed, and so did Chris Griffin’s attitudes which Alexa describes as ‘a bit misogynist’. The issue of biphobia, which some have speculated was the crux of the problem, was a tiny potential crack in the larger picture of small station politics, and the fact that Alexa is a very outspoken, straightfonrrard person who pulls no punches. What little can be described on homophobia at The Point is a simple lack of knowing what to do with a PSA (public service announcement) from the queer community when it comes in. Alexa offered to tape one recently, but the staff gave it to a salesperson to tape. A decision she describes as“Bizarre" since she does announcements all of the time at the station. “So, in our midst”, I find myself pondering, “there ARE Bi people doing good work, holding up to the everyday grind of whatever jobs they do and simply being bi. Their faces may become less of a blank slate if we look at someone like Alexa, who after answering the station phone and hearing me say,“Yes, I'm wondering if I could get an interview with Alexa Bauer?" Simply said, A&Ejune98 “Oh... that’s me, hold on and let me finish this other call.” and after she learned that Out in the Mountains was a paper for the GLBTQ community, simply came out and said. “Oh, well I'm Bi . . .” and suddenly I felt there was one more person out there, someone working in the public’s view who could say that phrase as casually and comfortably as I did. And that helped. ' Alexa Bauer can be heard on the point after hours, weeknights, (except for Fridays) and in on her show “Global Jam” Sundays 8 - 9 PM Which , she describes as “hers” the place she really gets to control the music.
