Ma Vie en Rose Wins the Globe REVIEWED BY So/v\EoNE — ~ — — — — — — — — — — — — — - £1 Vie en Rose (”My Life in Pink”), the award—winning Bel- gian comedy about a 7-year- old boy convinced that he will grow up to be girl, will play at the Savoy Theater from Friday, March 6 through Thursday, March 12. Showings will be each evening at 6:30 and 8:30, with additional matinees Sat- urday and Sunday at 2 PM. Director Alain Berliner has been quoted as saying that ' ”my film belongs to those who see it...People will identify with the film depending on their own experience. I'm not going to impose my vision and risk distorting theirs.” Berliner’s film, which just won the Golden Globe for Best For- eign Language Film of 1997, was written by Chris Vander Stappen, who based it on her . own experience of childhood. ‘ Says Ms. Vander Stappen, ”,When I was a little girl, I would pray to God and the fairies to make me a little boy, to correct the little mistake that had been made. I still do at the age of 38, though I now live with a woman and have come to terms with that. Of course, my experience was different from the film and my family was different. Also being a little girl was easier. Aboy who thinks he's a girl touched deep questions and fears about vi— * rility.” Ma Vie en Rose was one of the hits of last fall's New York Film Festival, and the festival notescalled the film ”a tender, humane, and loving treatment of a potentially controversial subject...Using a bright palette and highly textured mingling of social realism and fantasy, the film places young Ludovic’s dilemma and de- sires in a richly evolved setting of family, school, and neigh- borhood life.” For more information, call 229-0598 anytime or 1-800-898- 0050 after noon.
