I.900.933.3833 Sarah Schulman speaks continued from page twelve dg: How do you think the gay community should be proactive about familial homophobia? ss: What I think we need is a system of advocacy family therapy. Because one of the reasons that families feel comfortable being homophobic is that they're conformist. And there's no social pressure on them to act otherwise. But if we could pathologize homophobia and have a cultural agreement that homophobia destroys families— and if courts and social workers and family therapy would come at it from that point of view, and stop pathologizing the gay family member and start pathologizing the homophobic family unit. But this is very far in the future, because we don't have a cultural agreement that homophobia is wrong. In my mind, it's something like a tweIve—step program, where on the sixth step you take account of all the people in your life that you've been homophobic . towards. Or something like that. It's like, I was watching the Promise Keepers last week- end and I was mesmerized... dg: You know, there's this group of gay Promise Keepers now? , ss: No I didnt know that. Are they going to beg women's forgiveness for their sexism? I hope so. - dg: In the late 90's, in the time of Rat Bohemia, when most of the Lesbian Avengers groups and ACT UP chapters aren't around any longer, what do people in communities like ours right here need to be doing? ss: People need to start their own groups. Our generation started ACT UP, Queer Nation, and Lesbian Avengers. We did a good job. But it's not our turn anymore. People in their late teens and early twenties—— they have to come up with the new ideas. They have to start the new organizations and movements that reflect their reality. And they shouldn't be imitating what people did before them. And I'm ready — I will follow. I'm waiting for the young leadership to emerge. Sarah Schulman teaches at Goddard College and Barnard College, and lives in Green- wich Village in a rent-controlled sixth-floor walk-up. She's lived in the same apartment for the last eighteen years. Schulman’s next books will be released in September of 1998. Shimmer (Avon) is a 400 page novel about the early years of McCarthyism in New York City. The other book from Duke University Press is caI_led Stagestriick: Theater, AIDS, and Marketing. It's about the similarities between the play Rent and Schulman’s novel People in Trouble, and what market elements allowed Rent to become a huge hit. Palmer Legare on "Making a Difference" continued from page thirteen mine. "I can't take this anymore" he said as his eyes began to swell with tears. As I looked into them before he brought his head down to his folded arms, I saw more pain than I had ever seen before. ' I In that moment of sadness and tragedy, a rush of feelings came to me. But strangely enough, the feeling that was most powerful was one of joy. I felt joy because I knew I wasn't going to let people do this to a friend of mine. I felt joy because I knew I was finally going to speak up. In that instant, I realized that my excuse of stayingiquiet was derived from fear, not common sense. So I began to speak up. I wasn't sure how to start, but I knew I had to. I wrote a petition to the entire school faculty, stating that if the word "nigger" was used as often as the word "faggot,” there would be major repercussions. I was scared to even pass the petition around, but I knew it had to be done. Well over a third of the student body signed it, and I delivered it into the mail box of every member of the faculty on the day before April vacation started. I had no idea what the response would be. In the letter I asked that the faculty have a meeting about the issues with a group of students. Would they do this? Would such a meeting be successful? How would the teachers respond? Would Ibe harassed even more by students? I didn't know what was going to happen, but I did know that something had to be done. When I came back from April vacation, it felt like an entirely different school. Posted on all the bulletin boards were copies of the school's harassment policy, with the sexual orientation part highlighted. Also posted was a letter from one of the teacher's about the importance of school being a safe place. During third period, each class talked about the policy. Teachers were approaching me and telling me what a great letter it was, and that they didn't realize it was such a big problem. Soon we had a meeting with members of our high school faculty and a small group of students. The students made a presentation about the problems facing GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning) youth at Cabot school. Not only did we talk about the harassment problems, but we also talked about problems like isolation, lack of resources and the lack of mentioning homosexuality during classes. The meeting went so well that we decided to have another one, this time inviting the entire faculty of our kindergarten through twelfth grade school. At that meeting we quickly outlined what we had gone over in our last meeting, and then had a dialogue with the faculty members about what we could do about these problems. Cabot school has progressed very quickly in the months since I first passed out the petition. They have already had several groups make presentations to the high school, including. Outright Vermont. The middle school has seen two presentations about homophobic harassment. Cabot even has a gay / straight alliance forming. We still have a long way to go, but we are finally headed in the right direction. Not only has Cabot high school become comfortable talking about sexuality and equal rights, but so have I. I have realized that I can make a difference, a big one, right now. I have devoted a great deal of my time to bringing justice to sexual minority youth. I urge anyone who is reading this- whether you are a student, a teacher, a homosexual, a heterosexual, a concerned citizen— to take action towards justice at your school. There are many ways to do this, as I have found out. If you would like some ideas, feel free to email me at OutRight You CAN make a difference. Join the fight for equal rights. Help make the world a better place. Thank you. (This first appeared in Reaching Out, the 'Zine of and for OutRight youth.)
