Mary Alice Schatzle makes waves at IBM continued from page thirteen manual since something like 1978. People were not aware of it and by 1995 if you really wanted to show you respected people you really had to walk the walk and provide domestic partnership benefits. IBM really did announce that in September of 1996. When we enrolled for benefits in October effective starting Janu- ary lst of this year domestic partners were able to enroll with everyone else. OITM: Did you enroll, yourself? mas: Yes. We did. OITM: And how was that processed? mas: It was easy! IBM was very respectful and IBM wanted to do as much as they could to treat gays and lesbians the same way they treat heterosexuals. There is an affidavit that we had to sign and have notarized. But we didn't have to send it in to IBM; we just had to have it ourselves. They actually have one specific — person from the National Human Resource Center who was fielding all the questions around either domes- tic partnership enrollment process or actually doing the enrollment. One of the concerns that folks had voiced and that the Human Resource organization had recognized was that people might not sign up if they thought that it would ’out' them to their management team. IBM was very respectful and said ”No, if you Sign up for domestic partnership benefits, the only person who would know is one person in HR. They are sworn to secrecy because of their job.” OuT'iN TH E ‘MOUNTAIN-s'— NOVEMBER 1997 ’- 5.1‘ RAINBOW “*3 CIFRCLE ALL INCLUSIVE O . .
