V Pine Ridge Establishes Winans Wilderness Scholarship WILLISTON -— The Pine Ridge Adventure Center has established a scholarship in memory of Lollie Winans, who was murdered with her girlfriend, Burlington resident Julie Vlfilliams, while the two were on a hiking trip in Virginia last year. \Vmans had been hired to work as an intern at Pine Ridge, and planned to move to Burlington to live with Williams in the summer of 1996. Beagle Bourgault, who works at Pine Ridge, said that members of the Center staff were shocked when they saw headlines in the paper about VVInans’ and VVIlliams’ murder. He hopes that the Summer Wilder- ness Scholarship Program will keep Lollie’s spirit and love of the outdoors alive by providing financial sup- port for young girls to take part in the Adventure Center’s programs. This coming summer, girls between the ages of 9 and 18 can choose from a number of hiking and camping opportunities between June 22 and August 17th. Trips range in length from three days to two weeks and take place throughout northern New England and south- eastern Canada. Their degree of difficulty varies with the age and experience of participants. Some trips include rock climbing and canoein g, with lessons provided by the Center staff. In addition, participants will be guided through a Ropes Course in Williston at the start of each trip. The Adventure Center will also participate in the national “Take Back the Trails” movement on Memorial ' Day weekend by leading an overnight trip. To make a donation to the Scholarship Fund, or to find out more infonnation about the Pine Ridge programs, call (802) 434-5294 or write to the Center at 1079 Vifilliston Road, Williston, Vermont 05495. Pine Ridge also offers year—round programming for children with learning disabilities. In the end, test—takers could tally up their scores and discover it they were “gender freaks” or “gender novices" (or, on the far, far end of the scale, the reincarnation of Captain James T. Kirk). ‘ Bomstein ended the evening with one of her favorite essays, a personal history of sorts that looked at the regenerative powers of the human body. In graphic detail she described the sex change operation itself, along with the fears and confusion which occurred both before and after. She found solace in the fact that over the course ofeve_ry seven years, each cell in the human body dies and is replaced by another. Since it has been over seven years since her operation, the body she now inhabits is truly and naturally hers, a self—made creation and not the result of surgical alteration. The final presentation clearly demonstrated what made the night so remarkable for those who at- tended. Bomstein was able to weave together a tapestry of fact and fantasy that considered difficult topics from a number of perspectives. At times, humor created the distance needed to offset the overwhelming weight of the theories being discussed. At other times, her words and images drew the audience right into the scene being described and forced listeners to empathize. This incredible level of intimacy was perhaps best achieved in the question and answer period follow- ing the perfonnance. In a stunning gesture of camaraderie, Bomstein removed her wig and told the crowd “this is when I feel most vulnerable and unsure of myself.” With her shaved head exposed, she discussed the personal choicesshe has made in her life, and spoke with candor about her plans for the future. Throughout her presentation‘, Bornstein returned to a call for value—based politics in place of the current identity politics which are the norm in many gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities. When asked about a comment she had made years ago about the state and nature of the transgendered community, Bornstein admitted that trans people had come a long way in recent years. Even so, she held to her own claim ofnot fully belonging to that community because it was based on identity rather than values. “These days I hang out in the artistic community,” she explained. Bornstein intends to move to New York City in the near future so that she can live in such an artistic community. She also confessed that she looked forward to living in a place where she could feel more comfortable about being who she was and expressing herself however she wanted. “You have to admit,” she said, “there’s an incredible strength in numbers.” In addition to continuing her writing, Bornstcin also hopes to follow her dream of being a professional actress. Though she didn’t think she even wanted to appear on the coming out episode of “Ellen," she does have her sights set on another TV sitcom: “I’d like to play the part of the transgendered aunt on ‘Mad About . 3H You, she confessed. “Can youjust imagine?!” V
