ALANA offers support and resources to the Asian, Latino, African American, and Native American communities in Vermont. The Community Program has invited professional facilitator Regina S. Dyton back to the area to offer a workshop on homophobia entitled “Facing It, Tracing It, and Erasing It.” In particular, community leaders are encouraged to learn more about homophobia so that its effects can be countered in cultural communities. ALANA also hopes to continue developing its HIV/ AIDS programming. Its “Tribal Remedies” and “Heirnana y Hermana” (or “Sister to Sister”) offerings have demonstrated a need in the community to offer continued information and support. Director Naima Wade said that many in the community are still unaware of the “hidden language” used to talk about HIV/AIDS in the ALANA community. By way of example, she noted how the phrase “he/she has the package” is used to describe someone with an AIDS diagnosis. “Some communities are still feeling under- represented,” Wade said by way of explaining the need for further programming for the ALANA communities. “We need to work together and not see all these groups as being in competition with one another.” To find out more about the ALANA Community Program, call 254-2972 or write ALANA at 8 Williston _ Street, Brattleboro VT 05301.
