Out in the Mountains Campuses Plan for National Coming Out Day All around Vermont, organizersare preparing a number of events to coincide with National Coming Out Day on Octo- ber ll. As a matter of fact, what started out as a single day has become, for many, an event worth celebrating for a full week. Students at local colleges have been most active in planning events, despite the fact that many have only been back on campus for a matter of weeks. For that rea- son, schedules remain rough at 0lTM’s press time, and those planning to attend events are advised to check local listings or the OITM Web Site (http:// members.aol.com/oitrn/). Middlebury College plans to host an event for Representative Bernie Sanders on Monday, October 7. An open poetry reading at the Gamut Room will follow on Tuesday, and a panel presentation will take place in McCullough Auditorium on _Wednesday evening. In past years, this panel has been one of the school's most heavily attended presentations. On Coming Out Day itself, the Middle- bury Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Alliance will host a dinner. A movie will be shown on Friday, though the group has had trouble getting the College Finance Committee to approve of the film “Dyke Drama.” One source claimed that the committee found the title to be “too lurid,” and so the group is searching for alternatives. MGLBA hopes to cap offthe week with an all—cam- pus dance party on Saturday night. The Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Alliance of the University of Vermont will be ‘bring- ing a number of -guest speakers to the College’s campus, including Renee Hill, an African—American Lesbian Episcopal priest. Hill serves as Director of the Femi- nist Liberation Theology Studies at EDL and will speak on October 10th on “Re- flections of Race, Sex and Spirituality.” On the same day, the campus group will hold a speak-out in front of Bailey Howe Library from 12-1 :30, and a “Queer Community Orientation” from 5:30-7:30 in Billings Marsh Lounge. For National Coming Out Day, noted local artist Craig Mitchell will present his one-man show at 7:30 in the Billings North Lounge. The following evening, October 12th, the College will offer a free showing of the film "Paris is Burning” at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Center Theater. On October 14th, Lani Kaahumanu will speak. Kaahumanu, a nationally- known Bisexual activist, founded the group Bipol in 1983 as well as the Bay Area Bisexual Network in 1987. She is an author, poet, and eoeditor (with Loraine Hutchins) of the feminist anthology Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out.
