Out in the Mountains Book Review: The Woman Source Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community of Women. Edited by Ilene Rosoff. A Project of the Launch Pad. Reviewed by .loy'D. Griffith The Woman Source Catalog contains 505 pages of information creatively designed by women for women with the purpose of enhancing self—reliance and strengthening the women's community. The researched sources derive from books, videos, art, healthcare, organizations, software, and catalogs and even include entries on how to build your own house! Articles and reviews were written by contributors ranging from a 13 year old Vermont girl who describes her "coming of age party" to women with strong backgrounds in the feminist and lesbian presses. If knowledge is power, then this non-profit organization has collected a rich source of information and in so doing, provided an effective tool for women's empowennent. V - “Women From Down Under” Highlights Innovative Filmmakers Video review: “Women From Down Under” Reviewed by Nat Harrison This collection of four short films from New Zealand and Australia features award-winning efforts which received praise at Cannes, Sundance, and other festivals around the world. FEATURING Lucy Lzrwusss or r.v.'s Xena Wxuznroa Pnmcesst “WW3. Wonderfully lrirettftre sifgief . {}ff~*El:a~Wa§i. Fuartgi“ -New Water Trees The first short feature, “Peaches,” with the incredible New Zealand countryside as its backdrop, stars a young Maori woman, Sal (Tania Simon), and her encounter first with a lovely peach and ultimately with a lovely woman truckdriver (Lucy Lawless). Sal and her baby live with her mother. The two adults react with different levels of contempt toward Sal’s boyfriend Mog (played with perfect arrogance by Joel Tobeck). At the start of the film, Sal receives a peach from a grocer and finds possibilities for other gifts in her life opening up. During a party, the woman truckdriver introduces Sal to these possibilities in her description of what the perfect peach really is. The film ends with Sal, smiling in delight, biting into the ripe peach, with the woman in the cab of her truck smiling back at her. 5iror‘l:s salami Lesbian 8: Art=erc1~Wimx'm from Arzstraiia 3: lieu “Just Desserts” reminded me of “Like Water for Chocolate” as the mother (Nicoletta Boris) passionately cooks a variety of foods during her daughter Maria’s coming of age. For the rest of the film the food, with the titles of each in English and Italian, relates to some point along Maria’s coming of age: broth to drink during her period, Venetian fritters while she learns to masturbate with her girlfriend Mona, polenta when she and Mona betroth to each other, and gnocchi during sex with a boy on his surfboard. Finally, her mother sets down pizza dough to rise in her bed as she kisses her daughter’s forehead, beginning the next cycle. “Excursion to the Bridge of Friendship” portrays a woman named Maria receiving a letter from the Bulgarian folksinger Nadzhda asking to be sponsored as a performer in Australia Maria is reluctant, having left her own Bulgarian heritage behind. While one woman in Bulgaria enthusiastically readies herself, her Australian counterpart deals with her forgotten past This black and white film slowly and gently develops as Nadzhda and Maria both prepare for their meeting. “Jumping the Gun” stars Georgia Troy Barnes and Jenny Vulette in a narrated tale of a one night stand. The “Guest” (Barnes; we never learn their names) awakens in the apartment of her “Host” (V ulette). While one sleeps, the other scrapes together a cup of tea and spends some time fantasizing about last night's lover from the clues she pulls together from the surrounding apartment. She transforms the mess, launches an author’s career, and is inevitably left for the blonde in the photo by the desk. My favorite scene ends with the Guest back in reality, standing under a billboard with her fingers aimed at her head, laughing. “Women from Down Under” can be ordered from First Run Features, 153 Waverly Place, New York NY 10014.
