December 1995 2. Pride organizers snub Snelling Lieutenant Governor Barbara Snelling did not celebrate Gay Pride Day this year. After accepting an invitation to speak at Vermont's "Queers and Friends Fight the Right" Pride Day celebration, Snelling was later informed that she was not welcome at the event. Some members of the lesbian and gay community expressed opposition to the invitation, citing her ’ failure to publicly oppose the Graves Amendment to the doption Reform Bill and her failure to take a public position on the Gay Rights Bill in 1992. This opposition resulted in 5 Snelling's 'disinvitation' and placed a divisive wedge within the community. The term 'Babsgate' was .coined and the story " even appeared in the mainstream press. When asked what she would have shared with Pride Day participants, Snelling said, "In general terms, that all individuals deserve equal and just treatment which must be backed by the law. I'm totally supportive of rights for gays and lesbians." Friday for-—&)O0’YElV'8 DBIYCE Bugle (1)/C (OITM file photo) Babsgate’s namesake, Lt. Gov. Barbara Snelling 1. In March of 1986 the‘ first issue rolled off the presses with the headline "HTLV—3 Bill introduced in Montpelier." The format was newsletter style. In March of 1995 OITM rolled off the presses with a new format, newsprint, and a self-congratulatory headline. Indeed, this 'pat on the back’ was long overdue; OITM has served as the voice of Vermont's gay, lesbian, and bisexual community for a decade. Covering issues ranging from the fight for and eventual passage of the gay rights law to the evolution of Vermont Gay Pride Day to last year's arson attack on Vermont CARES, this newspaper has continued to grow and maturealong with Vermont's gay, lesbian, and bisexual community.
