Roberson Fletcher Allen Health Care extends benefits BURLINGTON -- As of January 1, 1995, Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, University Health Center and Fannie Allen Hospital have merged to form the state’s largest health care network, Fletcher * Allen Health Care. Fletcher * Allen is the third largest employer in the state of Vermont and one in a growing list of employers that extend health care benefits to the same or opposite sex domestic partners of its employees. Fletcher * Allen Health Care asks that those applying for dependent benefits meet criteria from one of two “menus”. The first “menu” consists of only one item, a valid marriage, certificate. The other “menu”, the one of interest to domestic partners, contains a “smorgasbord” of conditions that must exist in order to qualify for benefits. One must meet three of four criteria in order to qualify, ranging from joint ownership of a home to joint checking. State’s Gay Concerns Office closes its doors ALBANY, NY -- The four staff members of former Governor Mario Cuomo’s Office of Lesbian and Gay Concerns packed their bags as newly elected Governor George Pataki (R) started his first term. The office officially closed Jan. 1 and Pataki has not expressed any intentions of keeping it open. Cuomo, a Democrat, established the office in September 1989 in response to a recommendation of a task force on gay issues. According to Sheila Healy, who served as the office’s last director, New York had been the only state with such an office. “I think the office was historically an effective point of access to the governor * and his staf ,” said Michael Rosano, a political organizer at the Empire State ‘Pride Agenda, a statewide gay lobby. “What I found in terms of working with the office was if you had a complaint, it was dealt with a great deal of efficiency and resolve.” The office handled complaints of gay bashing and discrimination and pushed issues such as domestic partnership within the Cuomo administration, according to Rosano. I (The Washington Blade) Maine ballot battle undenrvay PORTLAND, ME -- The Secretary of State for Maine announced yesterday that a group in that state did collect enough valid signatures to put an anti-gay initiative on the ballot there this year. Gary Cooper, deputy secretary of state, said that his office will now send its report to the legislature. The legislature has the option of either enacting the measure itself; drafting its own, competing initiative to put on the ballot alongside the anti-gay one; or simply doing nothing. The legislature which meets until June 21, is expected to do nothing, which means the initiative will automaticallybe placed on the ballot in November. “We were expecting it,” said Karen Geraghty, president of a statewide gay j group, “and we have been working really hard, organizing within the queer community and also within the non—queer community, so we’re really excited about
