Sawyer was accused of stab- bing Fournier in a Brattleboro parking lot on September 15th after stalking her for several months. He had previously been arrested on an assault charge and released on the condition that he stay away from her. Fournier was with her partner Robyn Burke at the time of the murder. Sawyer also pled guilty to a charge of assault on Burke. Judge George Ellison is scheduled to sentence Sawyer on December I 15. The plea agreement means Sawyer would serve a minimum sen- tence of 40 years to life, with eligibility for parole in about 20 years. Y Appeal Filed in Second Parent Adoption Case A Chittenden county lesbian couple has filed an appeal with the Vemtont Supreme Court requesting that the court reverse a Probate Court decision denying the second parent adoption of their two sons. Probate Court Judge George Belcher denied the petition of the parents to have the non-biological parent be legally recognized on the ground that the parents could not be married. In appealing the decision, the couple asked the Supreme Court to rule that Vermont's adoption statute does not preclude the non—biological parent from adopting while keeping intact the rights of the biological parent. Tlieyalsorequestedthatthecotntdetemiirieon thebasis ofthe Probate Comt hearing that the adoption is in the best interests of the children (a fact even Judge Belcher stated) and grant the petition.
