Out in the Mountains Obituaries Peter]. Tivnan Peter J. Tivnan, 31, died April 24 at his home of complications from AIDS. He was born on June 8, 1960 in Patchogue, NY the son of Andrew and Janet Tivnan. He grew up in Clinton, MA, attended pub- lic schools, Holy Cross College and In- diana University. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, which transferred him to Hanover, NH, three and a half years ago. He made his home in West Hartford, VT. He leaves his longtime companion, Douglas Craig of West Hartford; his parents of Clinton, MA; four brothers, Kevin and Greg of Clinton, MA, John of Fall River, MA, and Andrew of Marlboro, MA; a sister, Mary Ann LaFleur of Clinton, MA; a nephew; a niece; and several uncles and aunts. The following is an excerpt from remarks made at Peter's memorial service on May 3rd by David Williams, Peter's nurse’s aide and ACoRN AIDS Buddy. I met Peter in October just before Charles died. If you knew Peter and his devoted Doug, you knew how busy their lives were. Peter was active in SAM, a strong support group for men, he was out and speaking to every group he could about HIV & AIDS and active in everything that supported his needs. At the time I met Pe- ter he was becoming removed, his tox- oplasmosis and seeing Charles put him in a deep depression and it was pushing Peter to the edge. Then Thanksgiving week he made one last—ditch attempt to resolve is- sues at home in Massachusetts. All the reasons for making the trip never got re- solved and he retumed to Doug dejected and tormented. Peter was a devout Cath- olic, but the price he had to pay was just too high. Church and family members would not condone his lifestyle, and for that Peter felt God was turning away, to love him lost and alone... So my friend Peter, I am here again to take care of you, to bathe you and to love you and keep you safe, with Doug by your side, devoted as ever. We will share the dreams that only we can share, we will guard you with our lives and our love for as long as we can, never to be abandoned, never to be forgotten. We will give you up when the time comes, but we will never let you go. So go now and join Giles who took the lead and the many I have come to care for and love. Charles, a king once but a queen forever; my friend Chris dragging everyone to NYC; Ev L. making drug runs to British Columbia twice a week so the supply would always be fresh; and last, my be- loved friend Michael A., who will show- er you with love and flowers the likes of which you have never known. So dear Peter the Church may have aban- doned you and no one saw fit to forgive you. But remember one thing;s it was God who stood by you and took you in his arms to beloved in the end, forever.
