Out in the Mountains Exploring Gay and Lesbian Culture Walter Zeichner/Carol Cohen In the Spring of 1992 the Church Street Center for Community Education spon- sored a course entitled “Exploring Gay and Lesbian Culture” taught by Carol E. (Crow) Cohen and Walter I. Zeichner, both therapists in Burlington. This was a first of its kind course for the Church Street Center which runs programs for the University of Vermont’s Division of Continuing Education. The idea for the course was to promote lesbian and gay culture as rich, positive, and diverse in order to increase visibility and foster gay and lesbian pride. The course was open to gays, lesbians, bi- sexuals and heterosexuals, all of whom were represented. The course included a variety of per- spectives; historical, multiracial, multi- cultural, and ideological. During one of the meetings a panel of local lesbians and gay men, activists for many years in Vermont, came to share with the class their stories, motivations, and visions from their lives as pioneers in the gay/ lesbian liberation movement. Sub- sequently, the class participated in a pro- cess of developing their own visions for the future of our community, and creat- ed “Action Plans” for personal growth, challenge, and achievement. No plan was considered inconsequential. The enrollment and attendance were way beyond our expectations (as well as the Church St. Center’s, who originally thought there would not, be enough in- terest to run the course. The class dis- cussions were highly charged. Student’s evaluations showed that the course touched people deeply, and they asked that a follow—up course be offered. The Church St. Center has agreed to run the class again during the Fall semester.
