Boston Gay Men’s Chorus
Sings in St. Johnsbury and Hanover

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus sang
from their hearts and filled the North
Congregational Church of St. Johnsbury
with their love. ACAP (the Northeast
Kingdom’s AIDS Community Aware-
ness Project) filled the house with an ap-
preciative and diverse audience.

The evening was a tremendous success.
The music produced by the 80 voices
resonated through the impressive main
sanctuary. The crisp black tuxedos and
white shirts of the chorus members were
framed by the church’s large pipe organ
as backdrop. On each lapel was a red rib-
bon. The power of the music was a won-
derful celebration for the passing of the

Civil Rights Bill. After months (years!)
of lobbying, arguing, cajoling, explaining
and variously baring our lives in public
and private testimony, it was especially
welcome to be able to relax to the songs
of se1f—ident:ified gay men. Some of the
pieces have been commissioned by this
or other gay choruses. Others were new
arrangements of old favorites, such as a
Cole Porter medley built around Anything
Goes. There were also a few pieces in a
classical voice tradition (Mozart, Bruck-
ner, Copland). The song Brother and Sis-
ter became a camp masterpiece as the
chorus member struck poses — the limp
wrists of the drag queen, the rapid arm
movements of the snap queen, the aloof.
