V Vermont News Kevin Murray plead no contest Kevin Murray plead no contest to a charge of attempted murder on January 6, 1992, and was sentenced to 5-20 years in prison. Murray, who attacked Roger Macomber outside Pearls Bar in April of 1990, is the first person to be convicted in connection with Vermont’s Hate Crime law. It was the viciousness of Murray’s attack and his statement to Burlington police that he had gone looking to hurt a “fag”, that helped spur passage of the hate crimes legislation in 1990. The bill increased the possible penalty for defendants who commit crimes based on hatred of race, religion, or sexual orientation. V ‘lb FACING THE NEW . FDR 5oo ygmg oF oeuocwa, F: “WT °E<‘5'°”5? _.
