Jess Hawk Oakenstar by Cheri Goldstein Jess Hawk Oakenstar will be performing at the Unitarian Church, Main Street, Montpelier on Saturday, August 10th~at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be $5-$10 on a sliding scale. This singer/guitarist/songwriter from New Zealand has written and performed for feminist theater and revues. She has performed solo, in duos, and in a popular women’s rock band in a variey of venues from open-air festivals to concert halls to bars. She has toured New Zealand with two revues. A third one, “Born to Clean”, for which she wrote several songs, had hugely successful seasons in Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney in 1987-1988. Oakenstar is also one of the perforrnersl writers featured on a compilation album of New Zealand women’s music called “Out of the Comets” by the Web Col- l)eca've. Ladyslipper is distributing the al- um. Jess is now back as a solo perfonner do- ing contemporary, upbeat originals which are sometimes moving, some- times funny, and always delivered with knockout Kiwi style. Jess was born and raised in Zimbabwe. She made New Zealand her home from 1979-1990. Since arriving in the U.S. in July of 1990, she has performed at the West Coast Women’s Music and Com- edy Festival and the Arizona Womym’s Music Festival as a sponsored artist.
