Out in the Mountains Looking for something to keep your- self busy during mud season and avoid the inevitable onset of late winter cabin fever? Why not think spring now and join the folks who are organizing this year’s Pride Day celebration? Vermont Pride became an official organization in the spring of 1990 with the express purpose of planning and facilitat- ing the Vermont observance of Gay Pride Day. Prior to that time, the event was handled largely through the efforts of a small number of people from the Vermont Coalition for Lesbians and Gay Men. The date for this year’s Pride Day festivities is June 22, 1991. Once again, Montpelier will serve as the central loca- tion for the celebration, with a featured rally at the State House. “At this point in time there are not a lot of details that have taken complete struc- ture yet since we have just started,” notes Vermont Pride organizer Ronnie Bancroft. She welcomes any suggestions that mem- bers of the gay and lesbian communities may have, especially in terms of keynote speakers, afternoon workshops, and parade planning. Anyone who has anything to do with the weather is also asked to ensure that the torrential rains which soaked the crowd last spring are not invited back. The Vermont Pride group will meet about once a month throughout the spring, with additional meetings scheduled as the target date approaches. The next meeting will be held on March 10 at 1:00 p.m. at 15 Harrington Avenue in Barre. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but who still wish to have some input can send their comments or sugges- tions to the Vennont Pride committee at: PO Box 1551, Montpelier VT 05601, or you can call Ronnie Bancroft directly at 479-3380. Whether or not you can actively take part in the planning for Pride Day 1991, we hope that everyone will mark the date on his or her calendar and make this year's event the best-attended to date! A Warm Welcome to the House Robert Paolini ( left), former State Representative from Washington County and an instrumental figure in the passage of the Hate Crimes Bill last spring, welcomes Ron Squires (right) to the Legislature. Squires (D-Windham County) is the first openly gay man to be elected to legislative office in Vermont. 20 Join The Fight!
