Delta Lambda Phi's objective is to provide a safe, friendly and sup- portive environment that allows men to interact with one another in such a way that has not been available in any other organization or social setting. The frat also wants to create the bonds of broth- erhood that will help each other when confronting issues of com- ing out, homophobia, HIV, and the myriad complex social issues- that all gay and bisexual men face. Delta Lambda Phi strives toward personal and social growth, plac- ing emphasis on fellowship and community service. They are committed to demonstrating that gay men can assume any social role, whether it carry great prominence or simple self—satisfaction. The brothers are excited about having the opportunity to become members of the first progressive male fraternity on any campus in the Northeast. Colony acting president Peter Kilgallen said, "We look forward to sharing that opportunity with our brothers from the Alpha Chapter (Washington, DC) and anticipate the bond will set a precedent for future chapters on the East coast." Boswell, a Yale historian who provoked debate with his research saying gay marriages during the Middle Ages were celebrated in the Church, died December 16th of the complications of AIDS. He was 47. Boswell drew national attention in June with his book Same Sex Unions in Premodern Europe, a study of more than 60 manu- scripts from the Middle Ages. Boswell contended that homo- sexual marriages were well established in the medieval Church. But Boswell's thesis was criticized by other scholars. He wrote that one major aim of his work was "to rebut the common idea that religious belief — Christian and other - has been the cause of intolerance in regard to gay people." Boswell joined the Yale faculty in 1975 as an assistant professor. He was appointed full professor in 1982.
