OITM Roundup: Continued from page 5 Gay doctors’ group “comes out” SAN FRANCISCO -- The American Association of Physicians for Human Rights (AAPHR) announced an historic decision to change its name to the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA). The name change for the 1,600 member U.S./Canadian medical group will become effective on January 1, marking the first time in its 13-year history that the San Francisco-based organization will have the words gay and lesbian in its name. The announcement is believed to be the first time that a national gay/lesbian organization has changed it name to more accurately reflect its mission. “By proudly becoming the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, we believe we are striking a strong blow against homophobia in medicine,” said GLMA Executive Director Benjamin Schatz. “By refusing to remain invisible as a group, we make it harder for the medical establishment to pretend we do not exist and to ignore the needs of gay/lesbian/bisexual physicians and patients alike.” “As an organization, we have long maintained that homophobia is a health hazard,” noted GLMA President Bob Cabaj. “Our new openness and directness will be an asset in dealing with such problems as the high rates of suicide among gay, lesbian and bisexual youth, substance abuse, and low self—esteem that can complicate HIV prevention efforts.” The GLMA works to maximize the quality of health services for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, to promote full civil rights, and to foster a professional climate in which members can achieve their full potential. V OUTSPOKEN: 0ITM’s Quote of the Month “The feminist line about pornography deliberately never mentions the enormous world of gay male pornography. They can't, because their whole rubric-—’Pornography degrades women’——doesn’t work if it’s man-on-man. Does any gay man think that a beautiful boy is reduced to mere meat? Yeah, it’s meat, but it’s fabulous meat!” Camille Paglia Culture critic and author Health Resource Organizations AIDS HOTLINES: Vermont 1-800-882-2437 New Hampshire 1-800-752-2437 New York State 1-800-541-2437 Massachusetts 1-617-522-4090 Maine 1-800-851-2437 National 1-800-342-2437 Canadian 1-613-563-2437 AIDS Community Awareness Project (ACAP) PO Box 608 St. Johnsbury, VT 05819 (802) 748-1 149 AIDS Community Resource Network (ACoRN) PO Box 2057 Lebanon, NH 03766 (603) 448-2220 Bennington Area AIDS Project PO Box 1066 Bennington, VT 05201 (802)442-4481 or 1-800-845-2437 Brattleboro AIDS Project PO Box 1486 Brattleboro, VT 05302 (802) 254-4444 (Helpline) (802) 254-8263 (Office) Franklin-Grand Isle AIDS Task Force P.
