exhibit titled Queer Covers, featuring poster sized dust jackets of those trashy novels from the fifties. On the second floor in the Yellow Wallpaper Room, one can find the vertical files. I spent quite a bit of time reading through Organizational files, Newsletters (including a few 0lTM's), Conference files, Unpublished files (these were fascinating — filled with early drafts of some well known lesbians, as well as academic dissertations), and Geographic files. I looked through the Vermont file. There was an assortment of articles from the Burlington Free Press and the old Vanguard, most written by Euan Bear between 1983 and 1984. There were notes from the first gay march in 1985 and from gay pride in 1986. I saw quite a few familiar faces, but I also saw a need for all of us to collect and send our state's information to the Archives. In searching through the Individual or Biographical files, I found an interesting paper written by Josephine Donovan, "And No One Knew I Kissed You: The Unpublished Love Poetry of Sarah Ome Jewett". Donovan's paper is based on unpublished material in the Houghton Library at Harvard (140 verse compositions and 73 poems — most written to women). For researchers this type of documentation is invaluable. Perhaps one of the most interesting sections in the Archives is the Special Collections. These are collections from individual women or organizations. I looked through the letters and notes. cards and bills of the late Mabel Hampton. There are boxes of Audre Lorde's manuscripts and personal papers. Much of the collection can also be accessed by computer. The remaining rooms upstairs are for the Periodical Collection. I spotted some new titles, along with standards like of our backs, Sojourner, and Sinister Women. The Archives also has an International Collection. For anyone interested in donating materials to the Archives, they provide a list of how to do so. They also have a strict policy for researchers to protect you rights. I found all the women I spoke with very helpful in showing me around and answering my questions. If you are heading down to NYC for the Stonewall Anniversary, the Archives should be on you intineary. It is a short subway ride (on the F train) out of Manhattan, or by car a few exits beyond the Brooklyn Tunnel. The Archives will have extended hours during that week but you do need to call ahead to confirm a visit. This collection has something for everyone. The Archives will change your view of our collective written past in fiction, poetry and dreams, our shared visual images as lesbians, our Herstory.
