Obituaries Mark Steven Cross Mark Steven Cross, 38, died Tuesday April 5, 1994 at his home in San Francisco after fighting a courageous battle with AIDS. He was born in St. Albans, the son of Waldo and Yvonne (Bushey) Cross. Mark grew up in St. Alans and attended schools there. He attended Wadhams Hall Seminary in Ogdensburg, NY and graduated‘from City College of San Francisco in1985. Mark taught culinary arts in the San Francisco high schools and at City College of San Francisco. He worked with many volunteer AIDS organizations. He enjoyed painting and music as well as many other interests. Mark is survived by his life partner, Jay Victor Hice, and his loving family, his parents, Waldo and Yvonne, and his three brothers and two sisters, John and Kathryn Cross of Milton, David Cross of Essex Junction, Jim and Penni Cross of Colchester, Joan Woodworth and David Pearce of St. Albans, and Jackie Hosak of Newport; 12 nieces and nephews and several cousins, aunts and uncles. John Preston John Preston, writer, editor and AIDS activist died of AIDS related causes on April 28th at his home in Portland, ME. He was 48. Preston wrote or edited more than 30 books of fiction and non-fiction. In the l970’s he was the editor of the Advocate. Born in Medfield, MA, Preston graduated from Lake Forest College in Illinois. In 1970 he founded Gay House in Minneapolis and in 1972 the Gay and Lesbian Community center of Minneapolis. His books included Personal Dispaches: Writers Confront AIDS (1990); The Big Gay Book: A Man ’s Survival Guide for the 90 ’s (1991) and Hometowns: Gay Men Write About Where They Belong (1991).
