anti—AIDS drugs? Gebbie: Certainly the lack of drugs is a problem. I'm not sure that money is what will make the difference because it also has to do with the brilliance of the ideas we have; until you have the idea all the money in the world won't get you there. We're trying to push people to keep having creative ideas and then let the money follow. The real problem continues to be denial and ownership of the problem. OITM: Why do you think people, specifically some gay men, continue to engage in unsafe sex? Gebbie: Why do some physicians still smoke cigarettes? Why is it people don't connect what they know in their head with their bodies? A whole lot of real complicated human life reasons. I think we're learning more and more how to help people make wise choices, how to give them the skills, how to say to them “you are worth it-your life is worth it” With sexuality, you can't do this without some blunt talk that our society has been reluctant to have. OITM: What message would you like to give lesbian and gay Vermonters? Gebbie: Stay concerned about this epidemic. Keep speaking up, know that you've got some friends who want to do right by this disease, and let's keep the dialogue going. We're going to save more lives here. As the first National AIDS Policy Coordinator, Kristine Gebbie’s chief responsibility of coordinating governmental efforts to combat AIDS remains an overwhelming task thirteen years into the AIDS epidemic. Gebbie's outstanding credentials, education in nursing, experience in public health, and straight forward style highlight President Clinton's national strategy in the fight against AIDS.
