Going to the Gay Games Sandra Chicoine is one of the elite Vermont athletes who will be attending the fourth annual Gay Games this summer, June 18-25 in New York City. Sandy has been in—line skating competitively since 1991 and will be racing in the in-line race on Sunday the 20th in Brooklyn. Sandy has been a yearly participant and winner of Roll Vermont, a benefit in—line race sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. This past year she was the winner of Roll Fest, an in-line event held on the beltline in Burlington. Sandy has also competes against the professional Team Rollerblade in Boston and was sponsored by Hyperwheels this past summer. She looks forward to _ participating in the race with her partner Jennifer Wagner, who will be participating in the recreational in—line division. In the winter Sandy trains on the ice. Last year she earned a silver medal at the Lake Placid in—line meet. “I think many in-line skaters have been attracted to speed skating”, she comments, “It seems to be gaining quite a bit of popularity in Vermont, especially with the addition of the new speed skating oval at the Catamount Family Center in Williston.” Sandy and all of the other Gay Games participants could use your support in New York. V Vermont's Coming Continued from page 1 addition to practicing, the team has been seeking corporate sponsors and organizing fund raising activities to help offset registration, travel and lodging expenses associated with participating in the Gay Games. “As a team we're required to pay $1,520 to register which doesn’t include travel, gym rental, uniforms or living expenses for the week” says Bolyard. Fund raising activities scheduled to date include a Men’s Tea Dance at Pearl's Bar on Sunday April 3 and a spaghetti dinner at Pearl’s on May 7. The activities planned for the Gay Games IV & Cultural Festival and Stonewall 25 celebration include exciting opening and closing ceremonies, a lesbian and gay cultural celebration featuring performances by many international artists, Olympic-style athletic competition, and a march on the United Nations coinciding with the annual conference of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA).
