Obituaries Michael Callen Singer, composer, and AIDS activist Michael Callen died on Decemebr 27, 1993 of AIDS complications. He was 38. Callen was best known to gay audiences as one of the leaders of the a capella singing group, the Flirtations. His last public performance with the group was at the 1993 March on Washington in April. One of the longest AIDS survivors, Callen worked for more than a decade to improve the quality of life for people with AIDS. He urged the use of the term “people with AIDS” as an alternative to “AIDS victims.” Callen was a memebr of the New York City Mayor’s Interagency Task Force on AIDS and the New York State AIDS Institute. He testified before state and congressional committees and published several works on AIDS. (AP, The Washington Blade) Fred McGowan Fred MacGowan of died January 21, 1994 of AIDS. He was 36. Co—founder of Friends Vermont, MacGowan was born in Niskayuna, NY in 1957 and raised in West Addison. He attended Castelton State College, where he studied theatre. MacGowan moved to New York City in 1978, working for_ photographer Jacques Simson. In 1988 he started his own photography business, MacGowan and O’Connor in New York and Chicago. In June 1992 he moved to a 20 acre farm in Bristol where he devoted himself to rennovating his 19th centruy farmhouse and caring for his two horses. In 1993, he co-founded Friends Vermont, a support network for people with HIV/AIDS and their families. . MacGowan leaves his mother, Marion MacGowan of Bristol, and a sister Donna MacGowan of Arlington, MA. His family requests donations be made to Friends Vermont, PO Box 402, Bristol, VT 05443.
