Out in the Mountains Burlington Human Rights Council Starts Work Established in response to a task force ‘ originally convened by former Burling- ton Mayor, Peter Clavelle, the Burlington Human Rights Council held its first meeting in late September. The Council, consisting of thirteen members appointed by the City Council, was created to “pro- vide a forum for citizens to bring con- cerns regarding housing, employment discrimination and other human and civil rights issues”. It also provides another way for citizens to connect with the State Human Rights Commission, which has the authority to prosecute illegal discrimination. In addi- tion to advocacy a large part of the coun- cil’s mission is community education. The thirteen members include repre- sentatives from many of the cultural and ethnic groups residing in Burlington. Among the members are two members of Burlington lesbian and gay community, David Curtis, Chair of the Board of Ver- mont C.A.R.E.S. and Deborah Lashman, Editor of Out in the Mountains. The Council can be contacted by calling the CEDO office in Burlington at 865- 71859 (TDD 865-7142) or writing the Human Rights’ Council, Room 32, City Hall, Burlington, VT 05401.
