Burlington Police Continued from page 1. know who they can go to when law en- forcement is needed, and can feel safe go- ing to the police. There are times when gays and lesbians are harassed, abused, threatened, and assaulted. All of these acts are illegal, and if we knew that the police would help us maybe we would be more likely to report these incidents and turn to the police for support. Another hopeful outcome of the meeting would be for the police to learn more about who we are, and how to work with us in ways that are not offensive either in language or in attitude. Both Greg and Sonny expressed strong feelings of support for_our_com- munity, and equally strong beliefs in the rights of lesbians and gay men to exist publicly without being trespassed against. The community meeting is in the plan- ning process. Anyone who would like to help organize or give input on this event can contact Walter Zeichner in writing at 323 Pearl St., Burlington, Vt. 05401, or Officer Greg Knight at the Burlington Police Department, 658-7658. The meet- ing will happen sometime in May. The meeting was a step towards creating a positive relationship between the Gay/ Lesbian community and the Police. The foundation is being laid for there to be trust and clear communication between the police and the community. Another idea that was offered was that this article to be written for OITM, including an interview with the Community Based Police. V 32 N.
