Dyke Scholarship

Just imagine being given money to help
with your graduate school tuition be-
cause you are queer! I was recently ac-
cepted to a Masters Degree Program at
the School for International Training
(S.I.T.) in Brattleboro. In my search for
grants and loans to pay my way, I came
across this S.I.T. scholarship listing:

“Student Diversity Scholarship; Eligibil-
ity: Based on S.I.T.‘s commitment to a
diverse learning community, the School
offers scholarships up to $2,000 to qual-
ified students who present a unique cul-
tural perspective. The Scholarship Com-
mittee encourages applications from
candidates who will enhance the racial,
national, and ethnic diversity of our pro-
grams. The committee also welcomes
applications from any individual whose
world View or life experience can en-
hance the diversity of our learning com-
munity.”

Well of course being a lesbian will bring
diversity and a unique cultural per-
spective to the school! At first I resisted
writing the 500 word essay so soon after
all the writing I had just done to get ac-
cepted into the program, but I just
couldn’t resist the challenge. Even as I
wrote there was a loud voice in my brain
screaming “Give it up! They’ll never
award you money for being a dyke.
don’t even bother trying!”

I was not terribly pleased with my re-
sults and had little hope of success when
I sent it off, but about one month later
the Committee wrote to say they had
awarded me the full $2,000. Money for
queers does grow on a few trees at least-
another sign of the times. V
