Joseph F. Watson Anti-homosexual messages are being broadcast through Ver- mont’s mountains and valleys. Christian radio station WGLY regularly airs anti-gay “news” items on its weekday show Family News in Focus (FNIF). With vague references to “ex- perts” FNIF reports on subjects like gays in the military, sex education in public schools, politics, and gay rights legisla- tion. Even covered is Benneton clothes’ new magazine Col- ors, which according to FNIF promotes homosexuality. Broad sweeping generalities and misrepresentations make FNIF more a propaganda tool than a news show. Accuracy is sometimes sacrificed to conservative bias. On Navy Petty Of- ficer Keith Meinhold’s case in Federal District Court testing the constitutionality of the military ban on homosexuals, FNIF reported: “Pro family experts say the military ban on homosexuality is a ban of deviant sexual behavior....” This is not true. The ban is on homosexual orientation. In fact, lift- ing the ban will not change the Military Conduct Code pro- hibiting oral or anal intercourse by both heterosexual and same sex couples. Another recent report is quoted as follows: “Homosexuals continue their relentless attacks on the Boy Scouts of Amer- ica. The Family Resource Council’s Bob Knight says two former Boy Scout volunteers are filing suits in the nation’s capitol. They claim the organization kicked them out for be- ing gay. ‘The Scouts are under attack all over and it’s some- thing that will be coming to your hometown soon because the homosexual activists aren’t going to give up.’ The two men went to a District of Columbia court to declare the Scouts’ ban on homosexual scoutmasters illegal.” As reported by Rob Gregory this example is biased. The phrase V“...it’s some- thing that will be coming to your hometown soon...” only adds to the listener’s paranoia. The tone used when referring to homosexuals is normally disparaging and not in the tradition of a true news report. Family News in Focus goes so far as calling homosexuality an abomination. When radio was invented the term “broadcasting” was bor- rowed from farming. To broadcast means to sow seeds, scattered over a wide area. By broadcasting Family News in Focus three times daily, Monday through Friday. WGLY sows the seeds of ignorance and homophobia throughout Vermont.
