Coffee Klatches and Congressional Battles The Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF) has launched its House Meeting pilot project, a grassroots organizing pro- gram designed to reach, inform and moti- vate activists and non-activists in gay and lesbian homes nationwide. A typical house meeting begins with the host inviting friends to his or her home. At the meeting, attendees review local, state or federal issues that affect them. Participants discuss how they can affect government action on AIDS and the battle for lesbian and gay civil rights. An HRCF video is shown at the meetings, which are not designed to be fundraisers. The event in informal, friendly and held in neighborly surroundings. The house meeting pilot project will initially focus on North Carolina, Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, Ohio and Georgia. If the project is as successful as anticipated, HRCF will expand it to other parts of the country. Jeff Levi to Leave as NGLTF Executive Director National Gay and Lesbian Task force (NGLTF) Executive Director Jeffrey Levi announced that he will leave the organiza- tion effective August 1st after 6 years of service with nation’s preeminent gay and lesbian civil rights organization. Levi plans to stay actively involved in the gay and lesbian rights movement and said his de- parture reflects a strong desire to work full time on the development and formulation of national AIDS policy. Levi joined NGLTF in 1983 as the Director of the Washington office. In 1986 he was named the Executive Director. During Levi’s tenure, NGLTF has in. creased dramatically its staff and member. ship and worked toward erasing a long. term $90,000 debt. ‘ Politically, Levi and NGLTF in 1983 l secured the first—ever funding by the federal ‘ government for community-based AIDS , service organizations. He helped drafta V. national consensus statement on national ‘ blood policy in 1984 and was responsible l for creating a consensus among public ' health officials and the gay community on 1 HIV testing. l In 1986, Levi began organizingacoa ' lition of national organizations whose con- stituencies were affected by the AIDS [ health crisis.
