March for Women’s Equality/Women’s
Lives

The National Organization for
Women (NOW) is organizing a national
march to keep abortion and birth control
safe and legal and to raise anew the unfin-
ished business of the U.S. Constitution by
passage of the Equal Rights Amendment.
NOW is calling this historic event, to be
held in Washington, D.C. on April 9, 1989,
The March for Women’s Equality/
Women’s Lives.

This March needs to be massive and
magnificent in order to send a message to
the White House, the Congress and theU.S.
Supreme Court that we won’t go back, that
a reversal of the Roe vs. Wade decision
legalizing abortion will cost the lives of
thousands of young women and girls. The
people speaking with one, loud voice is the
best hope to protect this essential constitu-
tional right.

Reasons to be GLAAD

Time magazine has printed its 5th
story in 1988 on a gay or lesbian topic,
compared to zero gay/lesbian (non-AIDS)
pieces in all of 1987. In August, the maga-
zine published a sensitively written piece
on Karen ’I‘hompson’s fight to obtain cus-
tody of her disabled lover, Sharon Kowal-
ski. GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Advocates
and Defenders) met with Time editors ear-
lier this year to protest their historic inatten-
tion to the gay/lesbian community. They
also prepared and delivered to Time a spe-
cial press packet about the Kowalski case
before that article appeared.

from irate viewers following the statement
by a guest doctor on The Today Show that
people who die of cancer are nicer than
people who die of AIDS. The next day the

 

network and the doctor issued an apology;

commended midshipman, to resign less
than two months before he was to graduate‘
and receive his commission in the US.
