Conference (New York, NY, September 21, 1988) Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. will host a conference for lesbian and gay law students at Golden Gate Law School in San Francisco on November 11, 1988 to officially establish the National Lesbian and Gay Law Students Associa- tion (NLGLSA). The NLGLSA conference is scheduled to coincide with “Lavendar Law: The National Conference on Lesbian and Gay Legal Issues,” which will convene Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, 1988, at Golden Gate Law School. U.S. Congress Defeats “Hostile” Danne- meyer Amendments Washington, D.C., September 23, 1988... In a 367—to-13 vote, the House passed the AIDS Federal Policy Act of 1988 (H.R. 5142), which expedites AIDS research, authorizes $1.2 billion.over three years for voluntary AIDS testing and coun- seling, and establishes a federal commis- . sion to study and make policy recommen- dations regarding AIDS. In addition, the House rejected various “hostile”~ amendments offered by Repre- sentatives William Dannemeyer (R—Calif.) ~ and Bill McCollum (R—Fla.) by over- whelming margins that startled even AIDS lobbyists working on the bill. Senate Passes AZT Funding Measure (Washington, D.C., September 3, 1988)... The U.S. Senate yesterday ap- proved a bill by Senator Lowell Weicker (R-CT to extend by six months the federal govemment’s funding for AZT (Retrovir) for low income individuals. The program expires today, the end of the 1988 fiscal year, and requires further Congressional action to continue. The Public Health Serv- ice has estimated the 6,000 people are on the program. The proposed funds, if given final approval, will be distributed through the state health departments. Each state may develop income guidelines for distributing the funds. Harvey Milk Remembrance Day De- clared The Harvey Milk Remembrance Committee has declared Sunday, Novem- ber 27—- the 10th anniversary of Harvey Milk’s assassination-- to be Harvey Milk Remebrance Day. The Committee urges gay and lesbian groups across the United States to hold events--such as vigils and workshops--remembering Milk and focus- ing attention on the growing problem of anti-gay violence.
